RYAN GOSLING | WARNER BROTHERS
MAIN TITLE | 2D MOTION GRAPHICS | TYPOGRAPHY

Prologue created the main titles for Ryan Gosling’s Lost River. We designed typography with the look and feel of antique hand-painted signs. The type treatment was also inspired by the ephemeral letterforms on abandoned storefronts among the urban decay of Detroit, where the film is set. We also presented concepts featuring still photos of “Leave it to Beaver”-era scenes of domestic tranquility, to create contrast with the central conflict in the story by establishing a feeling of a calm before the storm. This approach was later abandoned in favor of overlaying our type treatments upon live-action footage from the film. We thus immediately enter the characters’ world and see the protagonist’s children playing, imbuing the scene with a sense of nostalgia and the unsettling feeling that an oncoming tide may soon wash away the life they know.
