In 1997, Kyle Cooper directed the main title sequence for Ole Bornedal’s Nightwatch, starring Ewan McGregor. The film revolves around a serial killer who is known for carving out the eyeballs of his female victims. So Cooper cut out the eyes of photographs of young women he found. He then shot live-action of the pictures floating on and submerged in water. Typography is also reflected on to the water’s surface, as is video imagery. The title sequence also explored intercutting between the actual film’s first scene, and then dipping back into the tabletop water shoot, as well as the idea of repeating the main title over and over during the course of the open.
