Prologue created an opening sequence for Starz’ series Black Sails. After a research and pre-production planning phase, we shot live-action footage of period nautical instruments, we procured authentic original antique British nautical maps, burned and filmed the maps practically, and animated and composited them into background layers to unify the footage throughout our sequence; and we re-created the Jolly Roger flag seen in the show and burned it practically as well. The ship in our sequence is a CG model. Our final renders use both a 3D model provided by the show and a model we made in-house. We also customized the font in the credits with hand-drawn lettering borrowed from the typefaces and iconography in nautical atlases. Intercut are a series of shots of rough surf and ocean landscapes filmed here in California.
